Peterborough is the largest city in ceremonial county of Cambridgeshire. It lies on river Nene about 120 km north of London. Peterborough Cathedral or full name Cathedral Church of St Peter, St Paul and St Andrew or just known as Saint Peters Cathedral. This Cathedral is seat of Bishop of Peterborough which is dedicated to Saint Peter, Saint Paul and Saint Andrew. Statues of these three saints look down from three high gables of famous West Front. This cathedral was founded in Anglo Saxon period, because that architecture is mostly Norman. With another cathedral it is one of the most important 12th century building in England. Early English Gothic West Front facade is famous for its imposing and enormous arches. But effect which West Front gives the entering the Cathedral Close is overwhelming. History of Anglo Saxon origins of cathedral begins in 655 AD. Church was known as “Medeshamstede” and founded by King Peada. While repairing wall of church in 2008, workmen reported that he found Anglo Saxon grave marks. By that grave marks it is detected that they dated from 11th century. Cathedral was damaged during struggle of Norman invaders. Through the years it was repaired until it was destroyed by an accidental great fire in 1116. Church was mainly built from Barnack limestone. This cathedral has a quite history of destroying and rebuilding with many architectural styles. Despite all is a most beautiful cathedral which when you see it you are stun.
