ZADAR


Zadar is city in Croatia located on the Adriatic Sea in northern part of Dalmatian region. Zadar faces islands Pašman and Ugljan. To regards its climate Zadar has borderline with Mediterranean and humid subtropical, what means that summers are warm and humid and winters are mild and wet. As regards to prehistoric times, Zadar is populated since then. Zadar gained urban structure since Roman times. Town was fortified and it has city walls with gates and towers. On west side is the forum, temple and basilica and outside of the town are located cemeteries and amphitheatre. The Roman Forum is founded by Roman Emperor Augustus which is shown with two stone inscriptions. Mostly the Roman remains were used in the construction of fortification. Two squares still remain untouched and they are embellished with lofty marble columns. Also you can see a Roman tower on east side of town and Roman aqueduct outside the ramparts. Most famous sight of Zadar is St Donatus Church. This church is monumental round building dating from 9th century. It is made in pre-Romanesque style. It is considered that St Donatus Church is most important structure which is also preserved of its period in Dalmatia. The massive dome is surrounded by vaulted gallery in two stories. This church contains some of finest Dalmatian metalwork. Next amazing St Dountats Church there is also St Anastasia Cathedral or in Croatia Sv Stošija. It is basilica built in Romanesque style in 13th century. It is one of the largest cathedrals in Croatia. You also must visit Five Wells Square. The story goes back into 16th century when Venetians helped the citizens to withstand Turkish attack by building a large water cistern with five ornamentals wellheads. The city wall or Muraj how it is called in Croatian, they are preserved remains from Roman period. Among the city walls there is a Captain Tower and Land gate near port Fosa which is the most picturesque part. The most two amazing things are Sea organ and the Greeting to the Sun. The Sea organ are an architectural object located and also a musical instrument which plays music by way of sea waves and tubes located underneath a set of large marble steps. Device is made by Nikola Bašić. This place drawn tourist and locals in great number. Greeting to the Sun in another urban installation made by the same architect Nikola Bašić. It is consisted from three hundred multi layered plates in shape of a 22 meter diameter circle. Conduction plates are photo voltage solar modules which communicate with nature. It is it performance.
